Who We Are

St. James UMC seeks to be the heart of the Woodland Heights community and beyond. Our ministry is rooted in the greatest commandment, a love of God and of neighbor. Love always involves action. We as individuals are committed to being and making Disciples of Christ for the transformation of the world both locally and across the globe. Even though we come from a variety of backgrounds, we all seek to be the hands and feet of Christ as we worship, pray, grow and serve together.

St. James UMC: Connecting people to Christ through faith, service, and love.

Faith: Our faith is built on the truths found in Holy Scriptures, the power of the Holy Spirit, and in trusting in God’s purpose. Our faith in Jesus drives us to offer hope through transformative grace that all might experience the goodness of life in Christ.

Service: St. James is dedicated to making our world look a little more like heaven everyday. This is accomplished through local, regional, and global missions. We seek to feed, cloth, provide shelter, and bring hope right here in Spartanburg and across the world.

Love: The greatest commandment is to Love God and Love Neighbor. St. James is dedicated to living out our faith and belief in Jesus Christ everyday. This is accomplished by doing life together as we worship, pray, study scripture, and walk though all seasons of life with each other.

What To Expect

Worship

We have two services on Sundays here at St. James.

  • Our contemporary service, "The Gathering" is held in our fellowship hall at 10:00am.  This is accessible from our Lanford Road parking lot.  Follow signs to "The Gathering" which are displayed all through our building.
  • Our traditional service meets in the sanctuary at 10:30am.  The main sanctuary doors face out to Savoy Street with a large parking lot adjacent to the entrance.
  • Throughout the year, the church worships together in blended services with something for everyone.

Where do I park?

You are welcome to park in any of our designated "visitor" spots. If you choose to park elsewhere, you'll find signs near visitor parking that will point you in the right direction.

What should I wear?

Whatever you'd like! Here at St. James you'll find people dressed in suits and wearing shorts. Those who attend our Traditional service tend to dress a bit more formal. Those attending "The Gathering" contemporary service tend to dress very casual.

What should I do with my kids?

Children are welcome to stay and participate in worship services at all times. However, we do provide childcare for those five and under. Follow the signs to our nursery and remember to fill out the form provide so that we can know how to best care for your child, and so we can get in touch with you if need be. "The Gathering" also has a dedicated space in the worship center for children to play and learn during the service.  All of those providing child care have been Safe Sanctuary trained, background checked, and adhere to our child safety policies.
